Summary Review: 4.5 Stars (out of 5)
The disc golf course at Thompson Park plays across a beautifully manicured mowed-grass area with a dense smattering of trees. The rolling terrain provides some elevation, but no extreme elevation will be encountered. The course has plenty of length: 9 holes measure over 500 feet long. While the course seems very open at first, many of the longer holes have large trees strategically placed to force you to execute a good throw in order to avoid them. Thus, good power and decent accuracy are needed to score well here. While this course has one of the best sets of long holes I have ever played, it also has some very forgettable short holes; this is the main reason I don't give this course 5 stars. The course has good signage and flows well: I only needed to reference the UDisc course map once during my round. I was the only player on the course when I came here on a pleasant Monday afternoon in early September. That said, this park gets a lot of use, and I frequently had to wait for joggers or walkers to clear a hole before I could throw. The course maintenance is satisfactory, but some low areas tend to retain water well after a rain. Overall, I like this course, but it's too open and has too many routine short holes to earn 5 stars in my book. This course frequently ranks as one of the top 5 courses in New Jersey, and if you like more open courses with large numbers of long holes, then this is a good course for you.
Hole-by-Hole Review
Distances taken from hole signs. Picture sequence for each hole is 1) back tee, 2) approach, 3) basket to tee.
Hole #1: 264 feet, par 3
Comments: The opening hole has several trees with low overhanging limbs tight on the right, so starting your disc left of the basket and using a left-to-right disc flight gives you the most room to work with. Regardless of what shot you choose, don't miss right. #2 tee is to the left.
Hole #2: 546/387 feet, par 4
Comments: The first long hole plays moderately uphill. The initial tunnel of trees is fairly wide, and only a moderately low ceiling needs to be factored in. Past the tunnel the hole opens up, but a single large tree stands in the middle of the fairway about 300 feet from the back tee. You could go around that tree on either side. The left side is shorter but the right side is more open. There are no trees guarding the basket. If you don't get stymied by that final tree, birdie is very possible on this hole. #3 tee is behind the basket.
Hole #3: 579/516 feet, par 4
Comments: the longest and tightest hole yet. You could go for the tight, low gaps on either side of the large tree directly ahead, but going left will give you more room to work with on subsequent throws. Alternatively, there is a slightly wider gap on the far left if you want to get creative and use a sweeping left-to-right disc flight. There are no trees close to the basket, so 2 well-executed throws will setup a birdie opportunity. This is a very nice long hole. #4 tee is to the right near the baseball field's outfield fence.
Hole #4: 319/249 feet, par 3
Comments: a dogleg left that plays around the baseball field's outfield fence. A mandatory (mando) on the left protects the baseball field, but the shortest line to the basket goes just right of that mando, thus bringing the mando and its penalty very much into play. Plenty of trees guard the fairway, so you will need an accurate throw to have a chance at birdie. #5 tee is to the left across the parking lot.
Hole #5: 270/219 feet, par 3
Comments: fairly open and slightly downhill; a large tree on the right comes closest to the line of play. Aiming at the gap straight ahead and using a slight left-to-right disc flight should setup a birdie opportunity. #6 tee is behind the basket.
Hole #6: 522/444 feet, par 4
Comments: another interesting long hole. While the line is not as tight as on hole #3, a single tree pinches the right side of the fairway about 175 feet from the back tee. A couple more large trees block an approach to the basket from the left, so it will take 2 well-shaped and well-executed throws to setup a birdie opportunity. I really like this course's par 4's. #7 tee is to the left.
Hole #7: 525/429 feet, par 4
Comments: A pair of trees stand just in front of the tee, one on either side. The trees have grown enough that they somewhat block the tee shot, and I would like this hole better if those trees were cut back to create a wider line of play for your tee shot. Past the troublesome trees, the wide fairway has one of this course's few pockets of dense woods to the right, so don't miss right with your tee shot. A few more large trees guard the basket, and you will have more room to work your disc if you approach the basket from the left. #8 tee is a couple hundred feet to the left and across the park road.
Hole #8: 549/399 feet, par 4
Comments: The third consecutive long hole is a gradual dogleg left with a wide fairway. Aim at the small man-made mound straight ahead and use a slight right-to-left disc flight for your tee shot. The only overhanging limbs are within 100 feet of the basket, so this hole is more about power than execution. #9 tee is to the left.
Hole #9: 288/252 feet, par 3
Comments: completely flat and straight with just a couple of trees guarding either side of the fairway. Next.... #10 tee is across the park road to the right.
Hole #10: 253 feet, par 3
Comments: same as the previous hole but with tighter trees on either side. As interesting as this course's long holes are, some of the short holes are equally uninspiring. #11 tee is a couple hundred feet behind the basket.
Hole #11: 840/669 feet, par 5
Comments: back to a long hole, and it's an absolute gem! The tee shot plays downhill with some dense woods on the left and a heavy smattering of trees on the right. Try to aim at the small window of wild grass/marsh you can see in the distance and keep your disc straight. It is about 500 feet from the back tee to the marsh, so even with the downhill most players will not be able to reach the marsh with the tee shot; you will have to decide if you want to try to clear it with your second shot. There is no way around the marsh. Past the marsh, the hole doglegs left and heads steeply uphill to a basket guarded by a few more trees. This is the signature hole on this course, and whether you make eagle or double bogey, it is not one you will soon forget. #12 tee is to the right.
Hole #12: 279 feet, par 3
Comments: a downhill hole with a forced throw across a wild grass area. The hill and the wild grass prevent you from seeing the basket from the tee; it is behind a small tree about 20 feet to the right of the path you see through the wild grass. A left-to-right disc flight is the easiest way to get around that tree. Another row of trees and a park road (which is out-of-bounds/OB) are long, so don't miss long. #13 tee is across the park road behind the basket.
Hole #13: 564/477 feet, par 4
Comments: another interesting long hole. The tee shot plays downhill out of a heavy smattering of trees. As with hole #7, trimming some of those trees would allow more shot shapes with the tee shot. The fairway is very wide, but don't let the wide fairway lull you to sleep: it abruptly ends with another heavy smattering of trees and a small stream. The second set of trees is sufficiently dense that the only real approach is to keep your disc low and out of the limbs. There are no trees immediately around the basket, so 2 good (or lucky) throws will result in a birdie putt. #14 tee is to the left and back toward the tee.
Hole #14: 324/228 feet, par 3
Comments: a long gradually uphill par 3 with another heavy smattering of trees between the tee and the basket. If you choose to go directly at the basket, you will need to keep your disc low to avoid the trees. Alternatively, another wider line way out to the right could be used with a sharp right-to-left disc flight. Choose a line and execute a throw: this is one of this course's better par 3's. #15 tee is several hundred feet away; go uphill behind the basket and angle right across the park road.
Hole #15: 534 feet, par 4
Comments: The heavy smattering of trees makes this hole very intimidating. The park road to the right is tempting, but of course it is out-of-bounds (OB). Aiming just left of the large tree that stands directly ahead about 250 feet from the tee gives the most feasible line through the trees. That line is still very tight, and I would like this hole more if a windstorm came through and removed some of those trees. #16 tee is to the left.
Hole #16: 246/204 feet, par 3
Comments: short, straight, and moderately uphill, just keep a straight throw between the trees and under the limbs. #17 tee is behind the basket.
Hole #17: 260/210 feet, par 3
Comments: moderately uphill with a single large tree jutting into the right side of the fairway. The park road crossing the fairway almost 200 feet from the back tee is this course's only serious safety issue: plenty of cars, joggers, and walkers use that road. Maybe they should split hole #15 into 2 shorter holes and combine holes #16 and #17 into 1 slightly shorter hole to eliminate throwing across the road. #18 tee is behind the basket.
Hole #18: 507/453 feet, par 4
Comments: a long gradual downhill hole. The fairway is wider than on some other long holes, but some overhanging limbs still present problems. Nevertheless, 2 good throws will lead to a birdie putt. This is a gentle long hole to close your round. The parking lot is directly behind the basket.
