Driving Directions: In eastern Alabama, take I-20 to Leon Smith Parkway (exit 188). Exit and go south on Leon Smith Pkwy. Drive Leon Smith Pkwy. south 0.8 miles to the Choccolocco Park entrance on the right. Turn right to enter the park and take the third exit from the initial traffic circle; this exit is for the disc golf parking lot. The first tee is near the black boundary fence to the south.
Course Constructions:
Tees: dirt with 2 tee markers; 1 tee per hole
Baskets: 1 Mach III basket per hole; in good shape on my visit
Signage: marker post at each tee; shows only the hole number and the distance
Amenities: practice basket, restrooms, picnic tables, Coke machine, baseball, softball, and soccer fields, a couple of benches
Summary Review: 1.5 Stars (out of 5)
Built only in 2019, the disc golf course at Choccolocco Park shows its youth and rough edges. The course has its strong points. The baskets are in good shape, and the course was well-maintained when I came here except for a few anthills. I had no trouble finding the next tee without a course map. While the course's route forms somewhat of a loop, the loop does not close, so you will have a fairly long walk at the beginning or end of your round no matter where you park. Perhaps more problematic is what is not here. The tee constructions need upgraded to concrete or a more durable surface. The terrain is almost dead flat, and some areas especially on the back 9 have very poor drainage. Thus, water/mud will be an issue if it has rained recently. Many of the holes have no obstacles whatsoever; maybe that will change when the trees have a few more years to grow. Overall, while you will have a passable round here if you come during a dry period, I would avoid this course within a week after a decent rain. In its current state, this course does not merit playing over other courses in the region.
Hole-by-Hole Review
Distances taken from hole signs. Picture sequence for each hole is 1) tee, 2) approach, 3) basket to tee.
Hole #1: 265 feet, par 3
Comments: a mostly open hole except for a smattering of small pine trees near the basket. The pine trees are not much for obstacles now, but they may be when they grow bigger. The black boundary fence to the left could pose a problem for a poorly thrown disc. #2 tee is along the fence to the left.
Hole #2: 305 feet, par 3
Comments: almost a copy of hole #1 but slightly longer. #3 tee is several hundred feet behind the basket and to the left; walk along the parking lot and road past the maintenance building.
Hole #3: 370 feet, par 3
Comments: the basket is on a narrow grass island with the park road on the right and a parking lot on the left; check for cars before you throw. The only obstacles are light poles and a few small trees. This hole feels forced into a corner where there was no room for it. #4 tee is behind the basket.
Hole #4: 370 feet, par 3
Comments: a completely open hole with no real obstacles. Be mindful of cars in the parking lot on the right. #5 tee is behind the basket and to the right.
Hole #5: 250 feet, par 3
Comments: another completely open hole. The black boundary fence on the left and the park road on the right could come into play with a bad throw. Retrieving a disc thrown over the fence could be a challenge. #6 tee is across the parking lot behind the basket and to the right.
Hole #6: 180 feet, par 3
Comments: another completely open hole (have I typed that before?). The short distance makes this hole an interesting ace opportunity. #7 tee is to the left; notice the soap box derby monument near #7 tee.
Hole #7: 210 feet, par 3
Comments: another completely open hole (I feel like I've typed that before). Watch for cars in the parking lot to the left. #8 tee is behind the basket and across the parking lot near the soccer field.
Hole #8: 240 feet, par 3
Comments: now the course exits the athletic field part of the park and enters a more natural area. This hole plays around a tallgrass wetland on the left. Other than the wetland and a small sideslope, this hole has no obstacles. #9 tee is to the right.
Hole #9: 290 feet, par 3
Comments: the natural area has some larger trees, and some of them come into play on this hole. There is still plenty of room to maneuver a disc almost however you want. #10 tee is to the right.
Hole #10: 480 feet, par 4
Comments: the longest hole thus far, this hole plays through a medium-width corridor of large pine trees before doglegging to the right. Executing the dogleg requires going through or around a small cluster of pine trees, and this is the first hole on which any real strategy is involved. Thus, this is my favorite hole thus far. #11 tee is to the left.
Hole #11: 180 feet, par 3
Comments: a short hole, but several pine trees intrude into the line of play. A well-controlled throw is necessary to set up a birdie opportunity here. #12 tee is behind the basket.
Hole #12: 260 feet, par 3
Comments: a dead straight hole through a medium-width corridor of tall pine trees. This hole is similar to #10 but without the dogleg. #13 tee is behind the basket.
Hole #13: 200 feet, par 3
Comments: another completely open hole except for some pine trees that will not come into play for a well-thrown disc. The entire basket area was submerged under 2 inches of water when I played here. #14 tee is through the pines to the left.
Hole #14: 500 feet, par 5
Comments: a completely open hole except for the trees well out of play on either side. At only 500 feet, this hole should probably be a par 4 rather than a par 5. #15 tee is behind the basket.
Hole #15: 350 feet, par 4
Comments: this hole features a tongue of tall grass and small trees between the fairway and the basket, so you have to pick a throw and line to carry this area. This strategy element makes this hole my favorite hole on this course. #16 tee is to the right.
Hole #16: 400 feet, par 3
Comments: another completely open hole; tall grass on either side will not affect a well-thrown disc. #17 tee is behind the basket and across the paved trail.
Hole #17: 420 feet, par 3
Comments: another completely open hole (I've written that before, haven't I?) The basket is on a high right-to-left cross slope, which makes putting more interesting. #18 tee is behind the basket.
