Summary Review: 2.5 Stars (out of 5)

When I drove into Klein Park on a warm Thursday afternoon, I saw the flat land, the dense smattering of trees, and the large number of walkers and other park users, and I expected a disaster of a round.  Turns out, while the course looks rather unpromising at first, it's actually a decent course that has some warts.  The land is completely flat, which not only means there is no elevation on this course but also that any rainfall ponds where it falls.  I had to negotiate several wet and muddy areas even though it had not rained for several days.  Also, this park is popular: I had to wait on several holes for walkers and dog owners to clear before I could throw.  But those are the only 2 really bad things about this course.  The course has enough length and obstacles to challenge most players; it is neither grip-it-and-rip-it nor poke-and-pray.  The large number of long par 3s creates somewhat of a variety problem: 12 of the 14 par 3s measure over 300 feet from the back tees.  Also, there is no real signature hole, and some of the long par 3s are challenging but maybe not in a fun way.  The course constructions are adequate to good.  The course flow is mostly easy to follow; only twice did I have to reference the picture I took of the course map at the restroom building.  The course maintenance is fine except for the wet areas.  This course may not make your list of favorite courses because it is too flat and congested, but I mostly enjoyed my round here.  If you find yourself in Beaumont, it is worth playing here even though this course is not as good as some of the reviews at the major disc golf websites would indicate.

Hole-by-Hole Review

Distances taken from hole signs.  Picture sequence for each hole is 1) back tee, 2) approach, 3) basket to tee.

Hole #1: 495/288 feet, par 4/3
Comments: There's no easing into your round here: we start immediately with one of the longest and tightest holes on this course.  The jumble of trees directly between the tee and basket looks intimidating, but if you look to the right there is a reasonably wide fairway that will accept a right-to-left disc flight.  Thus, 2 well-executed throws will lead to a birdie putt.  #2 tee is behind the basket and to the right.

Hole #2: 360/240 feet, par 3
Comments: A sight dogleg left, the fairway is reasonably wide: the overhanging limbs may be a bigger problem than the trees lining the fairway.  Moreover, the woods are thin enough that even a disc that finds the trees will probably lead to a savable par.  The walking path 20 feet beyond the basket is out-of-bounds (OB), so don't miss long.  #3 tee is behind the basket to the right and across the walking path.

Hole #3: 428/297 feet, par 3
Comments: Back through the trees in the opposite direction we go on a tight hole with a low ceiling.  A dogleg left about 90 feet in front of the basket complicates your approach throw.  The length and low ceiling combine to make this hole a very hard par 3, and I can't say I really enjoyed this hole.  #4 tee is behind the basket and to the left.

Hole #4: 372/305 feet, par 4/3
Comments: a sharp dogleg left with the dogleg about 200 feet from the back tee.  Plenty of trees make the hole tight: good luck missing all of those trees, an endeavor I failed at.  This hole is a kind of a fun par 4 but a tough par 3.  #5 tee is behind the basket and across the walking path.

Hole #5: 565/300 feet, par 4/3
Comments: A dogleg right with the dogleg only about 100 feet in front of the basket.  This hole is fairly open in appearance, but any point on or to the right of the paved walking path is OB as is the road on the left.  Thus, you have to be careful trying to cut the dogleg.  This hole feels artificially crammed between the path and the road, and this may be my least favorite hole on this course.  #6 tee is to the right between the walking path and the road.

Hole #6: 428/225 feet, par 3
Comments: another hole that is crammed between the path and the road; again both are OB.  One tree on either side of the fairway constrains your line, but there is also a drainage canal that crosses the fairway 50 feet in front of the basket.  Though technically a forced water carry, the water level in the canal was low enough on my visit that you could find and play a disc that landed there.  It will take a long and accurate tee shot to have any hope of birdie here.  #7 tee is behind the basket.

Hole #7: 383/254 feet, par 3
Comments: After 2 crammed holes comes a another long par 3.  This hole starts very open, but a dense grove of trees about 80 feet in front of the basket must be negotiated.  That cluster is far enough away that I chose to hurl my disc as far as I could and hope I got a reasonable line to play through the trees, which I kind of did.  This hole is far less crammed and contrived than the previous 2 holes.  #8 tee is behind the basket.

Hole #8: 353/240 feet, par 3 (I forgot to take a picture from the tee)
Comments: The 6th long par 3 in the first 8 holes, this hole is a sweeping dogleg left.  The dense woods on the left forbid you from trying to cut the dogleg, but the fairway is wide enough to accept a well-shaped throw.  If you have enough distance and accuracy to get around the dogleg, a birdie putt awaits.  #9 tee is to the left.

Hole #9: 200/161 feet, par 3
Comments: Just when you can't stand any more long par 3s, you finally get a break with a pair of short but tight heavily wooded holes.  This hole has the tightest fairway on this course, but it is short enough that an accurate slight left-to-right tee shot will set up an easy birdie putt.  #10 tee is to the left.

Hole #10: 260/220 feet, par 3
Comments: a nearly straight hole.  It is slightly longer than the previous hole but not quite as tight.  #11 tee is to the right, past #14 tee, at the edge of the field.

Hole #11: 545/444 feet, par 4
Comments: This hole heads across a wide-open mowed-grass field, but a row of trees needs to be passed through about 60 feet in front of the basket.  Aim for the obvious gap in the trees that you see directly across the field: that's the direct line to the basket.  This hole is more forgiving that the other long hole, hole #5, if you have enough distance.  #12 tee is to the right beside the canal.

Hole #12: 309/248 feet, par 3
Comments: We go back to the long par 3s with kind of a strange hole that feels crammed between a row of trees on the right and the drainage canal on the left.  Overhanging branches from the trees create a low ceiling, which will be a challenge on a hole this long.  The line to the right into the field you just threw across may look tempting, but trees will block your approach to the basket.  This hole is challenging but maybe not in a fun way.  #13 tee is behind the basket; a bridge over the canal to the parking lot is on the left if you need to cut your round short.

Hole #13: 308/225 feet, par 3
Comments: another long par 3 with a low ceiling.  A right-to-left tee shot will have a higher ceiling, but it leaves a very awkward angle to attack the basket: the basket is located about 75 feet into the woods and is accessible only by a couple of very tight lines.  Like the previous hole, this hole is challenging, but I can't say I enjoyed the challenge.  #14 tee is to the right near #11 tee.

Hole #14: 305/210 feet, par 3
Comments: Now we go back through the woods for the last 2 heavily wooded holes on this course.  This hole is fairly straight, and the fairway is reasonably wide until you get within 100 feet of the basket.   A veritable picket fence of trees stands about 50 feet short of the basket, and you will have to choose whatever route through that fence looks most reasonable based on where your tee shot lands.  #15 tee is behind the basket.

Hole #15: 405/242 feet, par 3
Comments: A single tree stands in the middle of the fairway about 100 feet in front of the tee; the gap left of that tree is the most direct line to the basket.  Another pair of trees splits the fairway about 100 feet in front of the basket; again I found the left gap to be better.  Both of those gaps are quite tight.  You will need a couple of accurate throws just to make par on this hole.  #16 tee is behind the basket.

Hole #16: 330/246 feet, par 3
Comments: We bust out of the woods for the second and final forced-canal carry.  It is just over 200 feet to carry the canal.  Only a single tree guarding the front right approach to the basket presents a serious tree threat.  Thus, if you have the distance to carry the canal, birdie is very possible here.  I wouldn't call this hole a signature hole, but it might be my favorite hole on this course.  #17 tee is to the left.

Hole #17: 420/330 feet, par 3
Comments: The last 2 holes head south with the walking path and canal on the left.  Points on and left of the paved walking path are OB.  The OB is a definite threat, and the path is a major safety hazard because it is heavily-used.  2 trees on the right also pose threats, but for the most part there is plenty of room to the right.  Keep your disc right and throw it long!  #18 tee is behind the basket beside the walking trail.

Hole #18: 360/255 feet, par 3
Comments: very similar to the previous hole but slightly shorter with more trees guarding the right side. You are almost forced to challenge the trees: the walking path tight on the left is still OB.  You're better off with a recovery throw from the trees than you are OB.  The parking lot is behind the basket and past the restroom building.
